What Will A Dentist Do For A Broken Tooth Emergency
Emergency Dental Treatment of a broken tooth depends on the diagnosis of the tooth. An Emergency Dentist will initially see you for an Emergency Dentist Appointment where they will investigate to establish the correct diagnosis for the broken tooth. This will include:
- Relevant dental history of the Broken Tooth
- Clinical examination of the Broken Tooth
- Gum examination and Occlusal examination
- Special investigations such as X-rays or Vitality tests
Depending on the diagnosis the Emergency Dentist will offer you different treatment options for both the short term and the long term, including managing the symptoms if you have immediate Tooth Pain from the Broken Tooth.
If the Broken Tooth is restorable treatment options will include Composite Bonding, Dental Veneers or Dental Crowns. Root Canal Treatment may be needed if the pulp and nerve of the Broken Tooth is damaged. If the damage to the Broken Tooth is not repairable then you will need to have the rest of the tooth extracted.
Broken Tooth Pain
A Broken Tooth or Cracked Tooth may cause a very painful Toothache, especially if the inner pulp of the Broken Tooth is exposed. That’s where the tooth’s blood vessels, nerve, and connective tissues are, and if that area becomes inflamed or infected, the Tooth Pain can be excruciating.
If left untreated, a Broken Tooth or Broken Teeth can result in severe pain, infection, swelling, and a potential Emergency Dentist Appointment.
In most situations the Emergency Dentist will take X-rays of the affected area to determine the severity of the situation, then to create a Dental Treatment plan for temporary and permanent solutions based on the severity of the Broken Tooth or Broken Teeth injuries.
The Broken Tooth Pain may be due to exposed dentine which can be easily solved by Composite Bonding. If the Broken Tooth Pain is due to nerve pain then the alternative options would be Root Canal Treatment or Emergency Tooth Extraction.
Broken Tooth Infection
A Tooth Abscess occurs when bacteria invades the dental pulp – the innermost part of the tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue.
Bacteria can enter either through a Dental Cavity, Chipped Tooth or a Cracked Tooth and then can spread all the way down to the root of the tooth. The bacterial infection can cause swelling and inflammation at the tip of the root.
To elevate the Broken Tooth Pain the Emergency Dentist may need to extirpate the infected and inflamed nerve or to perform an Emergency Tooth Extraction.
Broken Tooth Extraction
Here are a few reasons why a Broken Tooth may be considered non-restorable and may need an Emergency Tooth Extraction:
- Extensive tooth decay or destruction of the natural tooth structure.
- Advanced periodontal issues.
- Resorption of the root
- Vertical tooth and root fractures
If the Tooth Extraction is simple the Emergency Dentist may extract the tooth at your Emergency Dentist Appointment to get you out of the initial Tooth Pain.
The Emergency Dentist will also discuss your options for short-term and long-term Tooth Replacement Options. These may include a Dental Bridge, Dental Implant, or partial Dentures.
How To Repair A Broken Tooth
Each situation is different, but if the original Broken Tooth can be saved, the Emergency Dentist will usually try to save it. If the damage is just within the enamel or dentine the Emergency Dentist can use one of the following Dental Treatments to restore the Broken Tooth for you:
Composite Bonding…
A small amount of tooth-coloured composite resin will be added to the affected Broken Tooth or Broken Teeth to improve its proportions, colour and appearance. The resin is sculpted to the desired shape as it sets so that it covers and fills your damaged teeth.
The Composite Bonding will perfectly match the colour of your teeth to ensure a natural result. Composite Bonding is a more affordable alternative to some Cosmetic Dental Treatments like Dental Veneers or Dental Crowns.
Composite Veneers or Porcelain Veneers…
Dental Veneers are wafer-thin laminates or shells of tooth-coloured material. They’re bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their cosmetic appearance. Normally crafted specifically for each Dental Patient they essentially mask the damage and are suited to Chipped Teeth or Cracked Teeth where the remaining structure and health of the tooth remains strong.
Dental Crowns…
Where the damage to the Broken Tooth is more severe, either a partial or full artificial Dental Crown will be precision crafted and then bonded to the Broken Tooth to give extra strength and to retain as much of the existing natural tooth as possible. For this procedure two Dentist Appointments will be required.
For the more severe Broken Tooth cases, where the internal structure (pulp) of the Broken Tooth has been damaged, specialist Root Canal Treatment will be needed, followed by an artificial Dental Crown to protect the integrity of the Broken Tooth.
