Tooth Extraction What To Expect

Prior to a Tooth Extraction, a thorough clinical examination is performed followed by X-rays. Depending on the individual diagnosis, Private Dental Treatment options are then discussed with the dental patient with the pros and cons of each dental treatment option.

We always aim to preserve teeth, however in some cases Tooth Extraction may be the only option if the tooth is unrepairable.

A Tooth Extraction is a dental option wherein a tooth is removed from its dental alveolus or socket. Depending on the status of the tooth, shape of the roots or the position of the tooth the dental patient may need either:

• A Simple Tooth Extraction

This is where the tooth removal procedure can be accomplished from above the gums using traditional elevator and forcep instruments. In most cases this can be done on the same day as the Emergency Dentist Appointment.

• A Surgical Tooth Extraction

Surgical extraction procedures are performed when the tooth cannot be easily accessed. This happens when the tooth has not fully erupted or when you have a Broken Tooth under the gum-line.  In this procedure, the dentist may perform an incision to elevate the soft tissues covering the tooth.  In some cases, the tooth may be sectioned into multiple pieces to facilitate its removal. 

Stages Of Tooth Extraction

1. The area near the tooth is numbed up by administering a local anaesthetic to ensure comfort of the dental patient during the procedure. It normally takes 2-5 minutes to achieve anaesthesia.
2. Loosening and elevation of the tooth: The tooth is loosened within its socket by applying leverage on the tooth with an instrument called an elevator.
3. Forceps delivery: When the tooth is sufficiently loosened, the forceps are adapted to the tooth to remove it from the jaw.
4. Achieving haemostasis: The dental patient is asked to bite down on some gauze to create pressure for a blood clot to be formed which then starts the healing process of new bone formation in the Tooth Extraction socket.
5. Post-Operative Instructions: The dentist instructs the dental patient on how to best look after the Tooth Extraction site to prevent any further problems or infection.

Discomfort Or Pain During Tooth Extraction

The main discomfort during a Tooth Extraction is when the dentist will administer the Local Anaesthetic via a needle. In some instances numbing gel may help reduce this sensation of a ‘pinch’.

The area is then tested whether it has fully gone numb or not. The dental patient will feel a pressure sensation during the loosening process of the Tooth Extraction. No sharp pain should be felt.

In some cases more local anaesthetic may be needed depending on how inflamed the tissues are around the tooth to be extracted. The dentist will advise the dental patient of a ‘stop’ signal in case the patient feels any pain during the procedure.

How Long Is A Tooth Extraction

A Tooth Extraction could take anything from 10 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the complexity of the case.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

A Wisdom Tooth Extraction may be simple or complex. Extractions of the upper wisdom teeth are generally simple Tooth Extractions. Extractions of lower wisdom teeth could be either simple or complex. Because of the lack of space, wisdom teeth can sometimes emerge at an angle or get stuck and only partially emerge. Wisdom teeth that grow through like this are known as impacted.

This is a complex Tooth Extraction that will need a referral to a surgeon, which could be either in-house or to the hospital. Hospital Referrals may take a few weeks whereas in-house referrals may take 1-2 weeks for the dental patients to be seen. The Tooth Extraction will be surgical where a small incision will be made in the gum and the tooth may need to be sectioned in pieces to be removed. Stitches will be placed after the Tooth Extraction which will naturally dissolve in a few weeks.
