Our fantastic Implant Dentist, Dr. Jesal Pankhania, received one of the most insightful and interesting Dental Patient Reviews ever from Chris May via Email recently. It was labelled ‘What It’s Like Being In The Chair’ and if you have time, please take a moment to read…
“What It’s Like Being In The Chair”…
My name is Chris May and I visited Dr. Jesal Pankhania for an Tooth Extraction yesterday and I wanted to describe my experience, so you understand more from the person sitting in the chair. I am 60 years old, with my formative years at the age of 6, being my first visit in the chair. My Dentist then was 63 years old, being born in 1907 and attending college to learn how to be a Dentist (just like you), in the year 1928. What he learnt in 1928, was what he applied and used with me at aged 6 years old.
No matter how good a Dentist you are, those formative years and experience for me at the Dentist will always be with me every time I arrive at my Dentist today, and run through my mind as I sit in your waiting room just before I have my appointment with you.
And so, to my experience from yesterday with Dr. Jesal Pankhania, which I want to share with you:
I was booked in for an Tooth Extraction, because a root was fractured during a recent filling and crown replacement on one of my back teeth and I was asked to sign a consent form, which started to build my anxiety.
I shuffled into the room to meet Dr. Jesal Pankhania for only the second time and his assistant or “helper”.
Immediately we had a social and relaxed discussion about what sport I had been up to, having arrived in my gym kit, which immediately put me at rest.
He showed me the Xray on a TV screen and confirmed which tooth, and an image of 4 years ago, which meant I knew he was taking out the correct tooth. I could see the increase in the decay by the shadow, which he explained and also the fracture of the root.
He then talked me through what was going to happen, and what I would hear and feel (cracking and snapping noise, with some gentle tugging) were words that I understood, yet I didn’t feel nervous about.
The injections were explained before and during, and he recommended I breathed throughout this (rather than hold my breath and tense, which is what I instinctively usually did!) “This side has less skin, so may hurt you a little more Chris” said Dr. Jesal Pankhania and I liked that.
We chatted more while the aesthetic did its job.
Then the Tooth Extraction took place, with no pain or discomfort and what I experienced was what he described, before he started.
This made me feel confident in his technical capabilities, so I relaxed in the chair.
At the end Dr. Jesal Pankhania told me that I had “done well”, and that the procedure had gone well and to plan, which reassured me again.
He explained what I needed to do to make a full recovery and that this was in writing in the envelope of notes he was giving me, so I didn’t have to worry about tuning in 100% and listening to him at this stage, as I was now thinking of getting home.
I was told to move my legs slowly over the side of the chair, then to “place both feet flat on the floor and to take a rest, then to stand up gently” which I did and I felt great with no feeling of light headedness.
He walked me to the reception area, looked me in the eye with a smile and a firm handshake, saying that “he looked forward to seeing me again in 6 weeks”.
I wanted to share with you, the importance of the technical part of being a Dentist, and also the human or chairside part of being a Dentist.
In summary, my experience yesterday was significantly enhanced by the human side; rather like going to a restaurant and having a waiter/waitress who really knows the food on the menu, and is also great at making you feel welcome and looked after in their restaurant. I always remember the service more and for longer, rather than the food I ate.
